The Schliemann controversy today

Especially since Schliemann's 150th birthday on January 6, 1972, and the "Midnight Lecture" of the American philology professor William Calder III in Neubukow, the life and work of the famous merchant and researcher have once again been subjected to increased scrutiny. The number of lies and inconsistencies found, obtained by comparing Schliemann's statements in his books and articles with his estate, mainly in the Gennadius Library in Athens, grew. Accusations of forgery became loud. Particularly anniversaries (100th anniversary of his death in 1990, his 175th birthday in 1997) attracted the attention of main critics, sensational journalists, and so-called bestselling authors. The Heinrich Schliemann Museum Ankershagen and the international Heinrich Schliemann Society have been making their contribution to objectifying the discussions since their existence through conferences and publications. This seems to have succeeded. The common view should be today:

Heinrich Schliemann was a man with faults and weaknesses, who occasionally lied, but his merits for the studies of antiquity far outweigh his character deficiencies.

"Classical tributes, such as the 90th anniversary of his death in 1980, are outdated by history." (Justus Cobit, 1987)
